UCL Ethnographic Collections Online Catalogue

The Material Culture Room

What is the Catalogue?

This is the searchable catalogue of the objects held by UCL Ethnographic Collections. To start searching right away, click on 'Search' above.

This collection exemplifying Material Culture, holds an enormous variety of objects, textiles and artefacts from all over the world. Much of the material was donated in the mid 20th century and acquired through scholars’ fieldwork, principally Daryll Forde, who founded the Department of Anthropology at UCL.

UCL Ethnography Collection has over 2500 objects from Africa, Oceania, the Americas and Asia. The database was established in 2008 as part of Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funding. The database is worked on continuously by academic, research, and project staff. Most accessioned artefacts have an entry in the catalogue.

Please note that some of the wording in the catalogues has come directly from historic documents and therefore may now appear outdated and even offensive. The historical value of seeing how objects were perceived at the time they became part of collections (or even before) is an important part of the object's history.
